Darjeeling is a small town with hills and the healthy climate means walks around town are an extremely enjoyable means of getting around.
A great way to spend a day is to take a share-jeep to Ghoom (the next town up the ridge), visit some monasteries there and walk back to Darjeeling via some of the villages.
One can also walk to the Botanical garden and spend a few pleasant hours appreciating the nature; then, there is a rock garden, which is very much at a (slightly longish) walkable distance. One can also enjoy the pleasant atmosphere at Merik Lake.
Kolkata is an ‘in your face’ city that shocks and charms the unsuspecting visitor. If your trip only allows for a visit of one or two of India’s metropolitan cities, then definitely consider placing Kolkata on your itinerary.
